The Sawtry VA GCSE and GCE ART and Photography Exhibition was a tremendous success on June 27th. A celebration of the wonderful artwork produced by Sawtry VA students packed both the main hall and the refectory hall. The exhibition has now become an annual showcase of the tremendous artwork produced by our students studying GCSE, AS and A Level Art and Photography. The work on show ranged from large-scale painted canvases and boards to sculptures and finely detailed pencil drawings.
The standard this year was the highest ever with many pieces demonstrating a technical content that would equal the expertise of work done by more mature artists. Some students have produced work that goes well beyond the expectations of that level. Truly remarkable when many of these students have produced this work whilst enduring the many pressures of all their other subjects. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to students for Outstanding Effort and Achievement. These were presented by Jill Challinor (Arts Society), Derek Lopez (Norman Cross Gallery owner), Tony Nero (Peterborough artist) and Michael Murfin (St Neots artist). The huge audience of students, parents, family and friends listened to the speakers outlining the importance of Art in today’s society and how successfully Sawtry VA Art and Photography Department have promoted Art and achieved excellence in the artwork the students have produced. Warwick Davis, who was unable to attend the exhibition this year due to work commitments, sent a powerful video message of support for the Art department and finally Ellie Childs received a wonderful portrait of herself painted by artist Francis Reynolds.
