We arrived at the airport at 8 in the morning so that we could be ready for our flight to JFK 3 hours later, we went through security and prepared for our flight. The flight itself was a long 7 and a half hours but we coped. When we finally landed in New York, we checked in at the YMCA hostel and then walked to the Empire State Building. Being able to go up the Empire State was an amazing experience which we would love to do again.
On the second day, we took a boat trip to Statten Island and Ellis Island. We had some free time to explore both islands and took lots of pictures. We also visited the 9/11 Memorial, Ground Zero, which was a saddening experience as all the names of the men and women who died were inscribed on the memorial site. Following this, we had some time where most us went shopping, we also walked down Wall Street.
We had free time before we all went out for the day, so a few of us decided to take a walk to Central Park and admire the snow that had fallen as well as the scenery. After meeting with the others, we visited a series of sites including Grand Central Station. The UN building and Brooklyn Bridge. Walking across Brooklyn Bridge was such a good exercise as we could see the NY skyscrapers from a distance. After walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, we all made our own way to Macy’s 34th Street and reconvened later on.
On the final day we had a choice of either free time or going to the National History museum whereas the rest of the group had free time. As Macy’s is the largest store in the world, we went back so that we could spend some more time there. We also visited Carlos’ Bake Shop where we both had cookies and cream cupcakes. We left New York with memories that will last forever, and arrived in the UK feeling very jetlagged!
Note by Hayley….the group of students were great to be with, so a big thank you from the accompanying staff
