Young Carers

We support young carers in our school. Would you like to know more?

Sawtry Village Academy is committed to meeting the needs of young carers and young adult carers so they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other students to achieve their potential.

Young carers are children and young people who often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. (Carers Trust, 2012)

The school has a designated Young Carers’ School with responsibility for young carers and their families.

  • Young Carers Champion Lead: Mrs Debbie Dixon
  • Senior Leadership Team Lead: Mr Ashley Yeoman

The school will only share information about young carers with professionals and agencies on a need-to-know basis to support pupils and their families.

Young carers tell us it can be helpful to have extra support in school and that it can make a real difference if somebody in school understands their caring role.

The school has an effective referral system and strong partnership in place with Centre 33.

We will be starting drop-in sessions during the school day for young carers, providing wellbeing and practical support.
