16 to 19 Bursary

Please see details below regarding the 16 to 19 bursary:

  1. Overview

You could get a bursary to help with education-related costs if you’re aged 16 to 19 studying at school or college (not university) in England https://www.gov.uk/guidance/16-to-19-education-financial-support-for-students.

A bursary is money that you can use to pay for things like:

  • Clothing, books and other equipment for your course
  • Transport and lunch on days you study
  1. What you’ll get

There are 2 types of 16 to 19 bursary. The vulnerable student bursary could include a bursary worth up to £1,200, depending on your circumstances and benefits. The discretionary bursary could include a bursary if you need financial help but don’t qualify for a vulnerable student bursary. You will get a set amount of money each half term, provided that you follow the guidelines for attendance as set out in the guidance booklet.

  1. To be eligible you must be:
  • Under 19 at the start of the Academic year you want a bursary for
  • Studying at school or college, or on an unpaid training course

For a vulnerable student bursary you must be in or have recently left local authority care, get Income Support or Universal Credit in your name, or be disabled and get both Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and either Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in your name. If you’re a parent you’ll also need to be living away from your own parents to qualify. You may get the full amount if you have expenses and study full-time on a course of at least 30 weeks. You’ll be told what evidence you need, such as benefit letters for example.
