Storm in a teacup
Forecasts of 55 mph winds and rain from storm Benjamin was never going to dampen the Art trip to London on Thursday October 23rd. In fact the weather was perfect, perhaps at times a little blustery. A tremendous opportunity then for students in both yr 9 and yr11 to see artwork firsthand in the Nations greatest Gallery – the National Gallery.
We travelled by coach to the National Gallery, where students explored J.M.W. Turner’s stunning paintings and learned that he had generously bequeathed a large collection of his works to help establish the gallery. We also visited the Radical Harmony exhibition, where students were thrilled to see Pointillist artworks up close. After the Pointillism exhibition the students were treated to a guided tour of the permanent collection by the gallery’s experts.
Afterwards, we walked across Trafalgar Square and over the river Thames via the Golden Jubilee bridge to the Jubilee Gardens. A thirty-minute river cruise followed, offering wonderful views of London’s landmarks — including the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, The Shard, and the Globe Theatre — all while enjoying lunch on board.
The day concluded with a ride on the London Eye, where students and staff took in spectacular bird’s-eye views of the city.
A huge thank you to all the students who represented the school so brilliantly, and to the staff for helping make the day such a fun and memorable experience!
