Year 8 students exceptional on Art trip to Fitzwilliam museum
Date Published

120 Year 8 art students from SVA recently enjoyed an inspiring and memorable visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, an experience that brought their classroom learning vividly to life. From the moment they arrived, students were surrounded by an extraordinary collection of artworks and artifacts spanning centuries and cultures.
Throughout the day, students studied a wide range of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and decorative objects. Every student created their own sketchbook and sketched details from artworks.
The visit encouraged students to think critically about art and its role in society. Guided discussions prompted them to reflect on how artworks are shaped by the time and culture in which they were created. Students had a brilliant talk from Fitzwiliam Museum educator Holly, who engaged students through drama and discussion. Thank you Holly!
SVA and Museum staff were delighted to see the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the groups. Students asked thoughtful questions, shared ideas with one another, and demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the trip, making SVA proud.
This trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum was a fantastic educational experience, providing inspiration, knowledge, and memories that will continue to influence their artistic journeys as we explore the theme of portraits and heads in the classroom.
Sawtry VA art teacher and trip organiser L Kitching commented: “This has been the nicest group of students I have ever taken on a trip. Their behaviour was magnificent. They were positive and fully engaged with the gallery talks, showing a genuine interest in the art and artefacts. They also created some very impressive work while at the museum.
“The students made their own mini sketchbooks filled with museum studies, and I will be awarding £10 vouchers to the the best. It will be difficult judging them as there are many excellent entries.”
One student said: “Going on the art trip was a nice break and it definitely made my decision to take Art GCSE even stronger and made me even more excited about it.”
We hope you enjoy the photos.
